Geospatial Workflows Reimagined: Agile Management & Cognitive Flexibility
Monday April 14, 2025 1:00pm - 5:00pm PDT
Geospatial Workflows Reimagined: Agile Management & Cognitive Flexibility
Monday, April 14, 2025 - 1:00 - 5:00 PM

This workshop explores how Lean and Agile principles can be applied to visual management, particularly within systems thinking to address complex work challenges. It focuses on improving communication, decision-making, prioritization, and collaboration. The session is aimed at knowledge workers, helping them visualize and manage work processes more effectively, including through visual tools like value stream mapping. Practical exercises will support participants in identifying bottlenecks and solving problems collaboratively.

This workshop teaches methods for adapting workflows, managing progress, and improving team collaboration in a dynamic, iterative environment. Cognitive thinking is leveraged to enhance decision-making and understanding in a team setting, ensuring that individuals can process information more effectively. Neurodivergent solutions are implied in the focus on customized, flexible workflows, which can cater to diverse cognitive styles and provide strategies that accommodate various ways of thinking and processing information. By emphasizing adaptable frameworks and visualization techniques, the workshop helps participants streamline work and communication while addressing individual and team needs.

Interactive Emergency Mapping: Using Open-Source and Hard-to-Find Data for Real-World Scenarios
Monday, April 14, 2025 - 1:00 - 5:00 PM

The goal of this workshop is to share knowledge about open-source and secure datasets that could be beneficial throughout the emergency management lifecycle. We will briefly go over the stages of emergency management (i.e., preparation, planning, response, recovery and mitigation) along with examples of real-life GIS applications from Solano County and Dewberry. Next, we will delve into the world of locating open-source data from local, state, and federal data repositories and, for public agencies, how to coordinate with private entities for secure data on critical infrastructure and those with access and functional needs. Lastly, this workshop will end with 2-3 emergency hands-on scenarios where attendees will work together as a team to determine what GIS data and applications they might want to have in a given scenario along with a few injects to “shake things up” along the way.

Disclaimer: Please note that this workshop is not in anyway sponsored nor approved by the California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) nor the California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) for the California Office of Emergency Services' Emergency Operations Center credentialing program.

Giving Back: Mapathon
Monday April 14, 2025 6:00pm - 7:30pm PDT
Put your GIS skills to good use at the CalGIS Mapathon. This evening activity will support the many projects of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT).

Participants should bring a laptop and have some basic familiarity with OpenStreetMap.

With all of the recent natural disasters, the GIS Community has responded swiftly to project requests, including GPN's GISCorps. Projects for the mapathon may include any number of responses from current disasters impacting the world and as the event nears, we will narrow down the projects we will work on this evening.
